Welcome to the February 2010 Newsletter from Kingston & Teddington Osteopathy!

Dear all!

A rather belated Happy New Year! We have had a very busy start to the year and I realised that a newsletter was very overdue. This newsletter is focussing on nutrition aimed at helping maintain healthier joints.

So, as spring approaches please take a look at your diet and focus on foods to help cellular and joint health.

What Foods are Helpful for our Joints?

WATER: One of the most important things is to drink enough water... no matter how good your diet and how many supplements you take, if you are dehydrated then your cells are dehydrated and will not function properly. Aim to drink at least 1.5 litres if you are fairly sedentary but if you are exercising then you should be aiming for a minimum of 2-3 litres daily.

Foods with OMEGA-3: These foods include coldwater fatty fish such as salmon, sardine and herrings. However you can also get this in dark green vegetables, nuts and seeds and wholegrains.

Foods with VITAMIN C: This vitamin helps the body form collagen which is a protein found in bones. Foods rich in vitamin C include kiwi, citrus fruits, strawberry, broccoli, cabbage and oats.

TOP TIP: For parents with growing children and teenagers encourage them avoid fizzy drinks. The carbonation can cause the body to lose calcium from the bones. So when you are growing or if you are female and post menopausal (and therefore more likely to be losing calcium from your bones) please do avoid fizzy drinks.

What Supplements are Helpful for Our Joints?

LITOZIN: A natural supplement called Litozin which is in fact Rosehip powder – its active ingredient which is unique to this product has anti-inflammatory properties. Its effect should be apparent in 3-4 weeks.

SUPER FLEX: by Healing Edge Sciences. This is a pharmaceutical grade Glucosamine hydrochloride (more readily absorbed by the body than the Sulphate version) and Chondroitin. It also has a pineapple enzyme extract that reduces swelling of joints. Its effect should be apparent in 8 weeks.

BIOCARE GLUCOSAMINE HYDRCHLORIDE: for people wishing to just take Glucosamine. Again this form is reportedly more effective than sulphate forms.

SOLGAR TURMERIC ROOT: has strong anti-inflammatory properties. This product is high potency.

BIOCARE MEGA EPA FISH OIL 1000mg: This product is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which also help maintain a healthy heart and facilitate the utilisation of oxygen by the heart muscle. This supplement is great for cellular health and therefore helps the body function well... including joints.
